It formed part of the last wall of defense that ran fromthe Alcázar to the river. It’s believed that the tower was given its name because of the sun’s reflection off the gold tiles that once covered it. The Giralda, the universal symbol of Seville, is the ancient minaret of the Islamic mosque. This tower, measuring 76 meters, was erected in 1184 by order of the Morrocan emperor Aby Yacub Yusuf. It’s foundation utilized stones from Roman monuments. In the 16th century, another level of nativity bells were added to the Islamic architecture, by pushing its height to 95 meters. The “Magna Hispalensis”, Seville Cathedral, is the second largest church after the Basilica inthe vatican, Rome. Its origins date back to the 12th century principle Almohade mosque, of which only the Patio de los Naranjos and the Minaret (the &lt;a href="http://photos-seville.com/the-giralda.php" title="Giralda, Tower of the Catedral of Seville, Spain"&gt;Giralda&lt;/a&gt;) exist today.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Construction of the Cathedral began in 1401, consisting of a large open area with 5 naves and 25 chapels. The Royal Chapel contains many of the works by Murillo, Zurbarán, Valdés Leal and Goya among others. The Almohade Minaret, known as the Giralda, was fitted with renaissance bells in 1568. In total, the Gothic cathedral houses 500 works of art, mostly from the 16th and 17th century.
